Does a higher-GSM fabric mean better activewear quality?

2026-10-12

Not necessarily. GSM (grams per square meter) measures fabric weight, but it does not by itself determine quality or performance. Two fabrics with a similar GSM can have very different softness, opacity, stretch, recovery and durability depending on yarn quality, knitting structure, elastane content and finishing.

For activewear, we therefore evaluate GSM together with the product's intended use and performance requirements. As a general reference, many leggings may fall around 220–260 GSM, while heavier fabrics may be selected for sculpting, compression or seamless gym products.

The goal is not to choose the heaviest fabric, but to find the appropriate balance between coverage, compression, stretch, comfort, durability and cost for the specific product. This helps avoid paying for unnecessary fabric weight while ensuring the garment delivers the performance your target customer expects.
